Highway Code: waiting, parking and lights

2,010 words · checked 2026-10-03 · Pro

Taxi and private hire drivers wait and park more than most road users, so the parking rules matter to you every working day. Rules 238 to 252 of The Highway Code explain where you may and may not wait, park or stop. Rules 110 to 116 cover lights, flashing headlights, hazard warning lights and the horn.

Waiting restrictions (Rule 238)

  • You MUST NOT wait or park on yellow lines during the times of operation shown on nearby time plates, or on zone entry signs in a Controlled Parking Zone.
  • Double yellow lines mean no waiting at any time, even when there are no upright signs.
  • You MUST NOT wait, park, or stop to set down or pick up passengers, on school entrance markings when upright signs show a stopping prohibition.
