Map reading, symbols and grid references

The TfL Topographical Skills Assessment checks how well you can read and use a map. Some questions show you a map on the computer screen and ask about map symbols, streets, places of interest and road numbers. This note explains how street maps are organised, what the main symbols mean, and how to find a square on a map grid.
How map questions work in the assessment
The assessment is computer based. You only need a basic understanding of how to use a mouse. The questions that are not route-planning questions are multiple choice. Some have one correct answer and some have two. The question will tell you how many answers to select. You look at a map on the screen and choose your answer or answers. You may also be given a map reference page. This page explains what the map symbols mean.
